Jean-Paul Gaultier

Gaultier was born in Paris and trained with Pierre Cardin, Jacques Esterel and Jean Patou. In 1974, he went to work at Cardin's manufacturing factories in the Philippines. In 1977 he began his own company and became noted for his humorous, sexy, glamourous and irreverent collections. During the early 1980s, he became famous for presenting the corset and bra as outer fashion rather than underwear. His famous conical bra was based on the 1950s sweater girl styles and captured the imagination of the world when it was worn by Madonna on her world tours.

Gaultier is inspired by street styles, Hollywood movies, different world cultures, traditions of French clothing, tailoring and the past. Since the late 1980s, Gaultier has experimented with the male skirt including variations on the traditional kilt.
